DENTON schoolgirls literally hit their opponents where it hurts after winning the Tameside schools’ rounders tournament.
The Year 7 side from Denton Community College saw off teams from Fairfield in Droylsden, Dukinfield’s All Saints and rivals from across the town St Thomas More.
In the tournament, the 11 DCC girls remained undefeated and were crowned champions as they finished top of the table.
Keira M, Chloe B, Keisha B, Nicole T-W, Sophie T, Talana W, Lacey H, Isla P, Alexis H, Jorja B and Mollie T took no prisoners on Thursday, June 27 – in some games conceding no points at all!
And teacher Rachel Ward saluted their achievement, saying: “They demonstrated excellent teamwork and communication skills alongside great sportsmanship. They were a credit to the school!”
The Year 7 rounders side from Denton Community College was not alone in showing its prowess as several triathlon sides also did themselves proud.
Competing against other Tameside schools at East Cheshire Harriers athletics club in Ashton, the students were in teams of six, made up of Year 7 and 8 students and Year 9 and 10 children.
Pupils had to complete three events in pairs – 400 metres rowing, cycling for 1km and running 800 metres.
The girls Year 7 and 8 team finished in second while their male clubmates were fourth.
In the higher age group, the girls finished third and the boys sixth.
Rachel added: “It was an excellent performance by all students and a great event to watch!”
